Filling out 941 requires you to collect details about your payroll and income for the prior quarter. Amounts that remain unpaid even after the first notice or from the day you received a notice demanding immediate payment, whichever is earlier, charge 15%. Employers of household employees usually don’t file Form 941. If you received notification to file Form 944, Employer’s ANNUAL Federal Tax Return, file Form 944 annually instead of Form 941 quarterly. The easiest way to remember these dates is to note that filing deadlines always fall on the last day of the month at the end of each quarter. This gives you one month to prepare Form 941 before submission to the IRS.

On top of facing penalties for failing to file your tax return, you will also be charged an initial penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax amount if you also did not pay the taxes owed. After receiving a notice of intent to levy from the IRS, the penalty will increase to 1% after ten days. This penalty will continue to increase every month until the payment is made. “The mailing address depends on the state your business is in, whether you’re submitting payment with your return and what quarter you’re filing for,” notes NerdWallet.

Line 7 to 9 – Tax Adjustments

Any adjustments to taxes – If the employer has made any adjustments to the taxes it has withheld or paid, it must report these on Form 941. In addition, if you are a seasonal employer that does not have to file a quarterly 941 form, you need to indicate that information in this section as well. To everyone’s surprise, Form 941 for 2019 had been revised in 2020 for quarters two, three, and four in respect of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this revised version, the IRS is allowed to defer payments for certain employment taxes. It is a part of two tax credits introduced due to the pandemic. As a monthly depositor, you must enter the tax liability for each month in the quarter.
